The Restless Mind – Why I Stayed Busy But Felt Stuck
After experiencing a devastating loss, I thought if I just stayed busy, I wouldn’t have to feel the pain.
I threw myself into work, helping others, and filling every moment with activity. But no matter how much I did, I couldn’t escape the weight in my chest. The grief, the trauma—it didn’t go away. It just sat there, waiting for a quiet moment to rise to the surface.
But grief isn’t the only thing that makes us restless. Maybe you’re not dealing with a deep loss, but you still feel stuck. Overwhelmed. Like you’re spinning your wheels but not actually moving forward.
In my recent webinar, The Restless Mind: Why You Stay Busy But Feel Stuck, I shared my personal journey of discovering how restlessness was sabotaging my healing—and what finally helped me find peace.
How Busyness Can Become a Coping Mechanism
At first, I thought my constant activity was a sign of resilience. I believed that movement meant healing. But the truth is, busyness can be a way to avoid pain—whether it’s grief, stress, burnout, or emotional exhaustion.
I took an assessment that showed my mind was only working for me 55% of the time—while 45% of the time, it was actually working against me. I was constantly battling stress, anxiety, frustration, guilt, and sadness.
I realized that avoiding my emotions wasn’t helping me heal—it was keeping me stuck.
The Lies Restlessness Tells Us
I had to confront the lies I had been believing:
“If I keep moving, I won’t have to feel the pain.”
“If I slow down, I’ll fall behind.”
“Something better is always just around the corner.”
“If I stop taking care of others, I’ll have to face what’s really going on inside me.”
But here’s the truth: God never asked us to outrun our emotions. He asked us to bring them to Him.
In Psalm 46:10, He reminds us: “Be still, and know that I am God.”
How I Finally Found Peace
I discovered a simple but powerful practice called PQ Reps (Positive Intelligence Reps), which helped me retrain my brain. These short, mindful exercises helped me shift from survival mode to thriving mode—making it easier to be present, manage my emotions, and actually begin to heal.
I learned that healing doesn’t come from ignoring the pain. It comes from facing it, feeling it, and inviting God into it.
